About This Script

Automatically analyzes the colors in your selected artwork and creates a organized swatch group in your Swatches panel. The script uses color quantization to identify the most prominent colors, then generates complementary shades. You can configure the number of colors to extract (5, 10, or 20), choose between RGB and CMYK color modes, and optionally generate tints and shades for each dominant color. Ideal for branding projects where you need to derive a color system from existing artwork or photography.

How to Install

Method 1 — Run directly

  1. Download the .jsx file
  2. Open Illustrator
  3. Go to File > Scripts > Other Script...
  4. Select the downloaded .jsx file
  5. The script runs immediately

Method 2 — Install permanently

  1. Copy the .jsx file to the Scripts folder:
  2. C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator [version]\Presets\en_US\Scripts\
  3. Restart Illustrator
  4. Find the script under File > Scripts > Auto Color Palette
